About Denver

Denver is a metropolitan area with over 2.1 million residents, with 3 quarters of them living in the suburban communities surrounding Denver. The Denver Metropolitan area boomed with growth in the 1990s, which caused many of the surrounding communities to grow exponentially in size.

Denver was established as the capital of Colorado by a group of prospectors in November of 1858 when gold was discoverd near the area where the Cherry Creek and South Platte River meet. The city was named after the Governor of the Kansas Territory, James W. Denver since at the time, eastern Colorado was still a part of the Kansas Territory. The discovery of gold, led to a rush of settlers and in 1861, and eventually the federal government established the Colorado Territory.

The city was originally founded as a main supply town for the mining camps in the area, but it later became a hub for agriculture. The many breweries, bakeries, meat packing and other food processing plants made Denver a regional center for agriculture.

Denver's economy is diversified into many different industries, which has helped Denver become a highly sophisticated city with many cultural activites, economic industries and recreational activities.

Denver International Airport is not the nation's largest airport. It is a 55 square mile facility that opened in 1995 and cost over $5 billion.
